Remarkably Bright Creatures

Remarkably Bright Creatures- Shelby Van Pelt

This book follows Widow Tova who forms an unlikely relationship with a giant octopus named Marcellus in the aquarium where she works. Tova is trying to solve the mystery of her son’s disappearance from decades earlier with Marcellus helping her uncover the truth along side a young man Cameron who is searching for his father.

Themes

  • Grief

  • Unlikely friendship

  • Found Family

  • Uncovering truth

This book has been recommended to me by so many people and I had a friend tell me multiple times how I need to read it that she gave me her copy so because of that I want to finish it as quick as possible to be able to return it to her. It is also becoming a Netflix movie in may so I want to have read it before that as well.

I added this one to my list because I just love Ali Hazelwood honestly. All of her books are so enjoyable and I can’t get enough of her writing that I needed to have one on my list for this month. Her books are funny and since this is a novella I thought it would be a quick read to have on the list.

Just Friends

Romance

Just Friends- Haley Pham

I want to read this book mainly because it was written by Haley Pham. She is someone I’ve been following for years and I just wanted to add another romance to the list for this month so I thought this could be a light easy read.

Dune Messiah

Sci-Fi

Dune Messiah- Frank Herbert

Summary

Second Installment in the Dune Trilogy. This story is set years after the end of the first dune and following the story of Paul Atreides as the Emperor of the known universe as he faces conspiracy from his political enemies and his own court. This show cases the dark side of his messianic role and the jihad he unleashed.

Themes

  • Anti-Hero’s Burden

  • Power & Politics

  • Humanity Vs. Divinity

  • Danger of Hero Worship

I LOVED Dune. I was one of my top reads a couple years ago. With the new movie coming out at the end of the year I want to read it. This is a shorter science fiction novel so I picked it as something different than romance but maybe not to overwhelming.

Great Big Beautiful Life

Romance

Great Big Beautiful Life - Emily Henry

This story follows two rival journalist in there competition to write the biography for a reclusive heiress Margaret. The books has a mix of romance, mystery and historical fiction as the two writers uncover Margarets past they are also navigating their own relationship.

Tropes

  • Rivals to Lovers

  • Grumpy Sunshine

  • Slow Burn

  • Forced Proximity

This one is on my list mainly because it’s a Emily Henry Novel. I’ve read People we Meet on vacation as well as Beach read and really enjoyed it. The story also has that mystery historical fiction that Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo has with main character uncovering the life of someone famous and not knowing everything adds that air of mystery.

Mary Jane

Fiction

Mary Jane- Jessica Anya Blau

Summary

Mary Jane is a coming of age story set in 1970’s following a 14 year old girl who becomes a summer nanny for a progressive family. This exposes her to the world of sex, drugs and rock and roll as the family secretly host a famous rock star and his wife.

  • Coming of Age

  • 1970’s Count culture

  • Lifestyles and Values

  • Nuance of Parenting and family

This was something that I had seen people online posting and reviewing years ago and I just couldn’t stop thinking about it lately. One of the things I heard about it is that it has a similar time period setting as Daisy Jones and the Six so that intrigued me more but with it being set as coming of age it made me think it might be something similar to the movie Almost Famous.

Kit McBride Gets a Wife

Romance

Kit Mcbride Gets a Wife- Amy Barry

Summary

Romance novel about the McBride brothers when their sister puts out a Mail-order Bride Ad for them. This follows Maddy Mooney an Irish Immigrant who arrives in Montana after being abandoned and pretends to be the bride from the ad to survive.

I bought this book a couple years ago when I was heavily into cowboy romance and thought it had a funny concept. It has been sitting on my shelf for years and it’s finally time to mark it as read.
